New Delhi:

Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is targeting to grab a sizable share in the less than 2-tonne payload category of small commercial vehicle (SCV) market with its first dual-fuel product in the segment.

"We are very optimistic about CNG as a fuel in this segment, and we will also double the production capacity in FY24. We believe that over the next few years, the CNG market will grow owing to reduction in fuel prices and the government's push on CNG infrastructure across the country," Baneswar Banerjee, VP and National Sales, Head- Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra said.

On Thursday, the automaker launched the Supro CNG Duo, which can run on both CNG and petrol, at an introductory price of INR 6.32 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will be manufactured at the Chakan plant in Pune, and gets a payload capacity of 750 kg, a range of 325km with CNG tank capacity of 75 litres. It is equipped with a 20.01 kW engine, providing 60 Nm torque and mileage of 23.35 km/kg.

Banerjee said that there are other interventions planned for Supro which could be seen coming this year, and that the company is working on an electric vehicle (EV) version of the model, however the market entry is not finalised yet. Without sharing a quantum of increase, he stated that the Supro CNG Duo will help the company to strengthen its position and grow the share in this segment.

According to Mahindra, the demand in the CNG segment has grown four times in four years. In the less than 2-tonne payload category which accounts for an average of about 16,000 unit sales per month, the CNG sales contribute with around 5,000 units.
